UK trials low-carbon smart grid initiative

UK Power Networks and Western Power Distribution (WPD), both distribution network operators, have selected Current’s Connected Intelligence power quality analytic sensors for use in a smart grid pilot initiative in the United Kingdom.
The projects will use smart analytics to better understand the implications of the growing use of low carbon technologies on network planning. These projects will also help gain a better understanding of user demand, manage network constraints, and illustrate the benefits of better communications between network operators and commercial customers.

Current announces smart grid initiatives in U.K.

London, May 7, 2012 — UK Power Networks and Western Power Distribution selected Current’s Connected Intelligence power quality analytic sensors for a pilot initiative in the U.K.
Current’s solutions are being tested as part of the LV sensor evaluation project, which is being funded by the Office of Gas and Electricity Market’s Low Carbon Networks Fund in support of Great Britain’s transition to a low carbon economy.

Iberdrola Picks Winner(s) for 1 Million Smart Meters

Iberdrola announced the next phase of its smart grid metering project in Spain on Friday. The energy giant will install one million smart meters after its initial pilot that began in 2010.
The contract will not go to one meter maker; instead, it will be split among seven companies: ZIV, Landis+Gyr, Sagemcom, Sogecam, Orbis, Elster and General Electric. The total contract is worth €300 million ($395 million).
